Professor Guy Claxton will run a two-day programme on Building Learning PowerTM, at UWCSEA Centre for International Learning in February 2014. If you are a regional educator or school leader who is keen to understand Professor Claxton's ideas, then you are encouraged to attend. Day 1 will deal with the basics, while Day 2 deals with the specifics of building these ideas into the classroom. Brief details are outlined below, and for further details please see the Agenda.

Building Learning PowerTM

There are two ways to help students get good grades. One develops students who are careful, compliant conservative and competitive in their approach to learning. The other gets even better levels of achievement, and also develops young people who are independent, inquisitive, imaginative and collaborative. The first is a preparation for exams and university entrance. The second gets them ready for the real challenges of the 21st century. Many countries, like Singapore, want to go the second way, but old habits die hard, and many well-intentioned initiatives have failed.

Building Learning PowerTM (BLP) is one of a small family of approaches that are really trying to map out in detail what it takes to go down the second route. If a teacher seriously wants to develop powerful learners, how does she have to change her habits? If a school principal seriously wants to create a learning powered school, what does that culture change journey look like?

These two days are an opportunity to find out how to genuinely become a 21st century teacher or grow a 21st century school. The first day is an introduction to the science, the vision and the practice of BLP. The second day takes a deeper look at how to change your classroom or your school.
